Biography

"I believe the role of the preacher is two-fold: to comfort the disturbed and to disturb the comfortable." That's the message that Dr. Alvin D. Thompson, Sr. often carries as he ministers to both young and old alike.

Dr. Thompson is a native of Thomasville, NC. He began his preaching ministry at Elevation Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC in 1990. There he was instrumental in service as a counselor, as a teacher in the Christian Education department, and as a diligent worker on the ministerial staff. His educational pursuits include Shaw Divinity School and Liberty University Seminary. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University where he received his BA, and where he is currently working on a Master of Social Work degree. Additionally, he received both a Doctoral degree and a Master's degree in Pastoral Counseling from Andersonville Theological Seminary.

Dr. Thompson was called to pastor New Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Clayton, NC in 1994 where he believes "the church is on the move in the right direction." He has a genuine love for his people as evidenced by his humble servant spirit. While at New Trinity, Pastor Thompson has implemented many outreach ministries and as a result, the local church has been blessed to provide a powerful food closet ministry, family & marriage ministry, and a health ministry to name a few. He has an unprecedented passion for ministry beyond the walls of the local church. For that reason he continues to impact the community in which God has placed him. Under God's guidance New Trinity offers one of the largest food pantries in central North Carolina. New Trinity has also been led by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to renovate an old warehouse that will be used for a community center in the downtown area of Clayton.

Dr. Thompson serves as the first chaplain of the Clayton Police Department and has become an advocate for partnerships between churches and community organizations. Through his outreach, lives are touched that our local church may never even know. Many of his teachings strive to preserve the family as a vital and effective vessel of God. He is a dedicated husband to the former Sharon Robinson who works in various capacities with his ministry and they are the proud parents of a daughter, Jazmine and two sons, Alvin Jr. and Aiden.
